Trump
Why should people outside the US should care about Trump or US politics?
Does the environment make the man or does the man make the environment
What makes Trump so special? Asking as an outsider.
What is the most morally wrong thing a President can do?
The mess of the Democrats
The topic of Trump emerged organically, capturing our interest amidst a slew of news headlines that dovetailed with discussions in our group chat. Intriguingly, we stumbled upon videos of Trump parading around the Texas border two months earlier, aligning perfectly with the timing of our discussions on immigration, a recurrent theme in US news. However, we realize that we may have left some topics underexplored, particularly regarding why “foreigners” are so invested in US politics, and probing deeper into the ethical boundaries of presidential actions—what actions by a President could be considered the most morally reprehensible. Reflecting on this, I recognize there were areas we could have delved into more deeply, and others we perhaps overemphasized. Nonetheless, it was a valuable learning experience. One of my key takeaways from 2023 is the importance of “gaining clarity through motion.” Our weekly rhythm has been instrumental in sharpening our focus, aiding us in refining our format, despite its imperfections.

This section highlighted some intriguing points. Notably, the entire Southeast Asian region, including Vietnam, stands to gain if the China +1 strategy materializes. Vietnam's population is comparable to that of just a few Chinese provinces, illustrating the scale difference. To compete with China, Vietnam must significantly develop its infrastructure, capital, and skilled labor force. Yet, its existing foundation offers promise, contingent upon effective governance. A key aspect of such governance is the assurance of continuity in long-term planning, execution, and the smooth transition of leadership.
The discussion could have been enriched by more thorough preparation and research, but even more so by including a voice from Vietnam, offering fresh, on-the-ground insights. It would have been beneficial to delve deeper into how corruption can act both as a benefit and a hindrance, and to hear from an expert about the intricacies of succession planning and the likelihood of maintaining continuity.
Looking ahead, it might be fascinating to investigate Jianggan's notion of nations' posturing versus the actual risk of conflict. While the situation may seem volatile, Jianggan suggests that appearances can be deceptive, citing how Iran and Pakistan exchange missile fire yet maintain a facade of friendship. This perspective, albeit simplified, opens up a nuanced discussion on the complexities of international relations.
